Name: Kayla Dee

Degree/Certification: B.S. Exercise Physiology
Board Certified Exercise Physiologist -American Society of Exercise Physiology
Certified Personal Trainer - National Academy of Sports Medicine
What do you do in the fitness industry?
I am a Certified Personal Trainer and Coach people both online and in person. I have been in the personal training realm since 2008. I have done gym setting training and Corporate Wellness, private training, group training and on-line training. Working with clients with goals ranging from general weight loss, muscle mass gain, preparation for a show, student athletes and more! I am the Owner of Fundamental Nutrition and hope to be able to not only great products to the industry, but also more knowledge! I have been competing in NPC Figure Competitions since 2012 and its be quite the journey!
Why do you do what you do?
Being able to prove to myself that I am more than capable of controlling my own outcome. I want to be able to teach people a lifestyle, not a phase. Beginning a healthy lifestyle should be taught in a way to make behavioral changes, not temporarily change bad habits. This industry is flooded with a lot of different personalities and egos. I want to be a positive light in others and help encourage them to be the best possible versions of themselves.
How do you measure your success?
I believe that success is measured by the amount of growth you achieve reaching a goal. What you learn about yourself and others is far more valuable than a plastic trophy. Waking up happy and going to be satisfied is a sign of success to me.
Favorite muscle group to work out?
Shoulders and legs for sure!
Favorite cheat meal?
Donuts is where it's at. Although that's not really a meal I suppose. So I guess it it was an actual meal it would be a gourmet burger and fries!

What do you do in the fitness industry?

I like to look at myself as the new faces of fitness. I didn't grow up dreaming about a career in fitness.  It all happened by chance, this happened during the time when I was finish up my Master’s program. But slowly in a short time, I felt as I blossomed into the fitness world as a bikini athlete, all while working during the day as a High School Biology and Health Teacher.  I trained for 15 months of before I decided to I competed under the National Physique Committee for Muscle Contest in Culver City. I recently just switch over to be a Figure athlete, so I am currently taking some time off from competing to build more muscle. I am no a strong propionate of doing shows back to back. I believe in quality instead of quantity. I simply think I need to make more improvements in my physique so that I can deliver a stronger and more competitive package the next time around.  Until both of my coaches and I feel that I am ready to grace the NPC stage again, I won’t be 100% satisfied. Patience is everything. Only time and hard work is going to make progress and improvements. This isn’t something that is done overnight; it is a forever going process.

Why do you do what you do?

As an educator and a competitor, I educate my students about the importance of their overall health and wellness. In the classroom, I am a strong advocate in fitness. I believe in influencing and mentoring the young and motivating the old. The work of inclusion is a responsibility held by all and done for all, person to person. I ensure that those that follow in my footsteps are led by example. Just like how I hold my students under my guidance to the highest standard as I hold myself. Their performance reflects an image of myself. Strong, hardworking, over achiever and goal oriented. You are only to give the best version of yourself. Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life. Because you become what you believe. If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. Your strongest muscle is your mind. Just like how it is in the fitness world. I continue down this path, because my fitness philosophy is that it is possible for everyone to achieve his or her fitness goals. Whether it is in bodybuilding, cross fit, MMA, or even just short-term summer goals. Therefore, I continue to push myself harder and harder each day because I hope to one day achieve an image for myself built through the fitness community that promotes fitness empowerment. I hope to one day inspire others to embrace a healthy lifestyle and to be the reason why people are inspired to far exceed the standard expectation.

How do you measure your success?

I am not really sure how or where I would begin to measure my own success. I believe that I am still learning! But from what I have learned so far, is that its all about dedication, motivation, determination, commitment and consistency. Follow the plan and trust the process is what one of my coaches once told me. You learn from your experiences and make yourself better than what you were yesterday. I don’t think my body is perfect. I actually believe I have a lot of work to do. But then again, everyone is his or her own worst critic. I believe Bodybuilding is about sculpting. It is an art! You are your own personalized masterpiece. The countless time and energy you put into it. You are a walking advertisement of your hard work.

Favorite muscle group to workout

Training legs is one of my favorite muscles to train! I love the variety and "toys" (tires, bands, boxes, etc.) I get to work with when training. If I could, I would probably just train legs every day!

One of the biggest mistakes that I’ve made in the past was assuming that I didn’t need to work on certain muscle groups.

I also had to humble myself and lose the ego about lifting heavy and which got out of hand at times. The only person I needed to be better than is the person I was the day before. Form is EVERYTHING and makes a huge difference in your results.

Favorite cheat meal

My favorite cheat meals?! I have so many favorite cheat meals that I can’t even begin to pick one, but my GO TO, my weakness is definitely sweets!  Oreo cookies and ALL KINDs of Ice Cream is definitely my kryptonite!

But what helps me remain focus on my diet and dealing with my cravings, is to just remind myself the struggle of getting here and how much better the reward will be, physically and mentally. I believe diet is the hardest part of this lifestyle compared to weight training. But it is very transparent; the secret to any perfect body is diet! Does not matter how much time you spend in the gym, diet is everything! This is the message that replays in my head everyday!

I feel that I have much more energy and much happier around others and myself. I have a more desirable physique at the age of 30 than I did in my 20s, and I feel more confident and much better about myself in every conceivable way. The conclusion I come to is that it usually is never worth caving in for that CHEAT MEAL!

What do you do in the fitness industry: I'm an NPC Figure competitor and am currently becoming an ISSA certified personal trainer.
Why do you do what you do? There’s nothing more satisfying to me than challenging myself to improve every day, and using whatever knowledge of training and nutrition I’ve acquired to help others discover that same feeling of satisfaction.
How do you measure your success? Achieving a goal would be one way, but another way I measure my own success is by how I learn from and overcome ‘failure’ to improve.
Favorite muscle group to work out? I have two of these..back and shoulders. If I could train them every day, I would! Part of that might be fueled by my desire to improve in these areas as well.
Favorite cheat meal? Everyone who knows me knows 9 times out of 10 I’m going for a good burger and sweet potato fries! A close second would be sushi. Yumm. I’m getting hungry just typing this ;)

What do you do in the fitness industry?

I never thought I'd even be in the industry due to the fact that I've been obese most of my life. I started my fitness journey in 2012 and steadily lost weight and basically rebuilt my body since then. I decided to compete in the NPC bikini division in 2014 to top off my weight loss achievement. Since then my purpose has been to inspire and show everyone that anything is possible with determination and hard work. Now I help coach some clients that reached out to me for help on losing weight by showing them and showing what worked for me through my journey.

Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I found that fitness doesn't only mean being fit physically. It also means being strong mentally. I initially wanted to change to be healthy and live a longer life for my daughter. Her witnessing my transformation inspired me to keep going. I believe that it made a huge impact on her seeing her mom become stronger overall and that's why I keep going.

How do you measure your success?

I measure success by the lives I've touched. By people that I inspire through my journey. It's also measured by the obstacles I overcame and how much I learned and gained on my way to achieving my goals.

Favorite muscle group to workout

I would have to say legs and shoulders. I have a strong lower body and I just love the look of nice sculpted shoulders.

Favorite cheat meal

I love sweets so I would have to go with donuts and ice cream. I also love a good cheeseburger and seasoned fries. I also have to have cheese steaks since I'm from the Philadelphia area.

What do you do in the fitness industry?

Owner of AW Fitness, which provides personal training, bootcamps, nutritional coaching, and also contest posing coaching. I also compete as an IFBB Men's Physique Pro.

Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I really love what fitness does for people and how people can use what they learn from accomplishing things in the gym, into other aspects of their life. It teaches discipline, it tests your will, it builds character, and much more beyond getting you stronger and healthier. To be able to share fitness with people and help change their lives for the better, makes me feel blessed for what I get to do for a living.

How do you measure your success?

I measure success by what I'm able to help others achieve. The more people I can help, motivate, inspire, the more successful I'll be.

Favorite muscle group to workout

It's always been chest, but now back is becoming more of a favorite since that is a body part I'm trying to improve

Favorite cheat meal

Donuts, Pancakes, Ice Cream, pretty much anything sweet!
